Visual identity for a jazz event starring Stan Getz & João Gilberto.
Background
Getz and Gilberto are jazz / bossa nova artists that need no introduction, being collaborators who (for the most part) brought bossa nova to America.
For this project, I wanted to give Chicago a taste of bossa nova, creating a speculative visual identity for Getz & Gilberto, if they were still alive to tour today.
I worked hard to use physical collages I had created digitally, essentially re-collaging them digitally in order to create a tangible, water-color-y feeling.
Solutions
It was difficult to translate the musical style that Getz & Gilberto had, because it's very intuitive, but still very structured and traditionally jazz. It's calming,
and smooth, but it's not always completely relaxing. This is why I decided to keep colors very basic, and allow them to blend over eachother to create complexity.
I also wanted to make sure that most of the 'complexity' within the design stemmed from the sharp and strange edges of the collage, and not anything crucial, like
type or color. I was actively listening to a lot of Girl From Ipanema and Corcovado while conceptualizing the identity of this event, and I really think it shines
through in a great way.
